Mise-en-scene blog post

For my activity my goal was to create a non basic interactive experience to show my character Jasper. We needed to follow a prompt which was "driven by a thirst for knowledge and adventure, and this character seeks out new". Me and my partners represented this this by creating a story which revolves around jaspers thirst for knowledge and adventure. We made a map, mood board, theme song, and video to best show our character Jasper. He is a friendly innocent kid who doesn't fully understand the world around him. He treats everyone with compassion and respect. He loves music. He is very adventurous and very curious. His curiosity and desire for adventure is a double edged sword which can help him in many scenarios, but can also lead him into very bad situations.

Again in order to illustrate our character we made a story, We used a theme song, map, a video, a storyboard, and a tactile representation. In our story Jasper gets lost due to his curiosity, and needs to find his parents. The theme describes the emotions, and somber setting of most of the story, while ending with a happy finish for when he finds his parents. The video shows us what happens in the story, with subtitles which help tell both the story and jaspers character better. While the map shows the places he went better. It provides a proper setting along with the directions the character went to. The story board allowed us to create a well written story; it made a basis for the rest of our project. Our tactile representations were just things that Jasper would use, such as versatile boots, headphones, a draw string bag, and a portable radio. In order to illustrate our characters into station we just thought of ways which would best represent our character like the video, and things which would help support it so our character is represented well. Things such as our tactile and our theme song

The main thing our character used was othering. Most people in this day in age are stuck to social media and modern technology, and most people dont love to learn. Our character is fundamentally different. He loves using old time classics such as radios, and loves to take adventures, he is also super curious. We used selection in order to decide how a character would fit our prompt the best. In a way our setting was made to be de-centered. Our story happened in new york city, where its very populated easy to get lost, and the main transportation was by train, and walk. After creating our character and setting we just made up a story of him getting lost, which jasper needs to use adventure to find his parents. We made the cause for loosing them curiosity as well.  So in summary we used selection to make a character, chose a setting and made a story which well represented our prompt. Overall I believe we did well, our project was different and conveyed everything it needed to. There were some parts of our project which had less effort put in, as each part was done by a different partner. So the effort in some parts could be increased, but also our project could have been based off the prompt better. We made our project based off a story which well represented our character, but after overhearing criticism from another group I realized its easier to see the story it self, rather then the true intention: Jaspers desire for knowledge and adventure.

The romance genre is a common and beloved genre. With big time directors like Richard Linklater, Nancy Meyers, and Damien Chazelle which have innovated and created the game so that every generation can enjoy this genre. Romance  usually does well do the fact its so emotional and it has the common theme of love which everyone can connect to on some sort of level.

The typical audience ranges heavily, it can be from teenagers to people in their 40s. However romance can be enjoyed by people with a age more than 40 as well. They attract such huge demographics as one love is universal and 2 people who start relationships or looking into them can associate with romance, and so can people who want to make their romance to last longer or be at another level. One of the most successful films is La la la land with over 440 million in gross income. it shows the immense love and potential of this genre.

The common theme revolves around 2 characters who play around with love. Many stories often begin with something called a meet cute moment a special moment witch makes the spark of love. The issues often arise due to the fact they cant be together, like family's opposition or long distance. In the notebook noah and allie fall in love, but they face issues such as class, but they persist and eventually are able to love each other. This is a good example of the emotional pull it provides.

This genre is heavily based on how it feels visually and emotionally. When editing  they use warm tones and low lighting to show closeness. Dialogue is key as it provides the sparks of love, and essential key details which keeps audiences engaged. Costumes and setting are really important as they provide colors which can express emotions. When editing editors make sure to use close ups of peoples faces, and use moments of silence in order to connect to the audience.

In terms of institutional conventions, romance usually conveyed through imagery and emotions, movies often use contact gazing of eyes etc... They use pastel colors to show love. Trailers are super important as they leave important cliff hangers which are dramatic and reeling. Films are often published during holidays to give people a romantic sort of vibe. Marketing often includes soundtracks which often also become popular like a thousand years by twilight.

The note book perfectly shows the perfect romance film. It’s told through 2 peoples who's love defies all problems. It has a perfectly emotional narrative with beautiful cinematography. The film’s color palate makes it so iconic. Similarly, Crazy rich Asians had great innovations with there humor and culture. Rachel and nicks relation ship can really connect to real relationships while being innovative.

Other strong examples of the romance genre include pride and prejudice from 2005, Silver linings play book from 2012 and About time from 2013. Each of these explores loves complexity playful natures sacrifices and all of theme are timeless.

In the previous videos and the sound lesson, I have learned about layering, synchronous sounds, asynchronous sounds, Diegetic sound, non diegetic sound, sound motif, sound perspectives, voice overs, and how music can help provide deeper meaning to a piece. Layering is where you combine multiple clips of audio to better the environment. Synchronous sounds are sounds that match outside the current scene. Asynchronous sounds are sounds that come from outside the current scene. Diegetic sounds are sounds that characters in the film can hear, like a radio. Non diegetic sounds are sounds that are added in. Sound motif is a recurring sound or theme that represents the environment around the scene. Sound perspectives are how sound changes with distance. Voice overs are how the narrator speaks over the scene to explain things. Music enhances emotion.

In the first sound project we were supposed to make a story only using sound clips. It had to be in a true 1-2 minutes. We needed to add our own Foley. We needed at least 4 Foleys. We were only allowed to use 7 words to convey our story.  For the second project we needed to add sound to our camera shots, and angles project. In this we originally had no sound, and we had to add sound to convey our message as well as possible, including realistic background sounds.

First in order to do sound project one we wanted to find a story where we can convey the message with as little words as possible, we also wanted to do something where there was a lot going on. So we eventually came up with a meteor crashing into a space station. From here we created a realistic story with a lot of issues, so we could add lots of sound. After we created our story, we made it so we could add a load of sound, so from here we chose our sounds we would add, and in the end we decided which sound would work the best with Foley.

For project 1: We thought of a good story, and then we included a load of problems, so we can convey more meaning to the story. For project 2: we just added sounds which would convey our message, then we added background sounds which would be realistic in a classroom scenario.

Our story up  was split into the different problems, and so we organized it by problems occurring then from we just added sounds we thought would be appropriate to each problem of our story. It helped as we were we could add different sounds to each problem. For project #2 we used our outline where it was already split  up into different parts, where we just added sounds which would convey our message. It helped as we were able to organize our sounds into different sections more easily.

We faded in sounds, we faded out sounds, and we also decreased and increased the volume on certain sounds in order to make the environment feel right. For project 2 I faded in sounds, and also faded some sounds out, while increasing and decreasing certain sounds.
